Will Photography Give Way To Holography?

Holography is the science and practice of making holograms. A hologram on the other hand, is a physical structure that uses light diffraction to make an image.

A holographic image can be seen by looking into an illuminated holographic print or by shinning a laser through a hologram and projecting the image onto a screen.

Holography is based on the principle of interference. A hologram captures the interference pattern between two or more beams of coherent light (i.e laser light). One beam is shone directly on the recording medium and acts as a reference to the light scattered from the illuminated scene.

On the other hand, Photography is the art, application and practice of creating durable images by recording light or other electromagnetic radiation, either electronically by means of an image sensor or chemically by means of a light-sensitive material such as photographic film.

What You Need To Know About Holography in juxtaposition with photography:

  1. Holography is a technique to generate three-dimensional, 3-D images. Photography is a technique to generate two-dimensional, 2-D images.
  2. Interference and diffraction of light is used in holography. Reflection of light is used in photography.
  3. Photography is the two dimensional (2-D) view of a three dimensional (3-D) object. Having the dimensions of height and width only. Having the elements of the object organized in terms of a flat surface, especially emphasizing only the vertical and horizontal character of the picture plane.

While in Holography, the viewer can see the image of the original object completely in 3-D form. Having three dimensions, including height, width and depth, like any object in the real world.

  1. In holography, both intensity as well as phase of light wave is recorded, thus holography gives three dimensional (3D) picture of the object.

But in photography, only intensity is recorded therefore photography produces two dimensional (2D) picture of the object.

  1. Holography requires a monochromatic, coherent light source e.g laser light.

But a photograph can be recorded using normal light sources such as sunlight etc.

  1. When recording a holography, the light from the object is scattered directly onto the recording medium.

But a lens is required in photography to record the image.

  1. If the hologram is broken into parts, each part is capable of reconstructing the entire object.

But in photography, the destruction of even a very small portion of the negative results in an irrecoverable loss of information.

  1. Several images can be recorded on hologram at the same time.

But in photography, a single photo film cannot record several images at the same time.

  1. Information capacity of the hologram is larger than that of a photograph.

Photograph has less information capacity than holography.

  1. Hologram produced by holography is a positive pattern.

In conventional photography, a negative pattern is produced on the film.

That’s exactly what was used to create that short holographic video you see there and the good news is that the technology is already in the market.

We can now literally be in one place and appear in another place in real time and it is not witchcraft. It is tech! And the indisputable reality is that, as the typewriter gradually gave way to the computer, as letter writing gradually gave way to emails and texting, photography, one of man’s greatest invention, will soon give way you holograming.

Our forebears did it long before our ancestors were begotten.
